Podcasting is a web-based broadcast medium in which media files are made available online thus allowing software to automatically detect and download new files.
A podcast is comparable to an audio magazine subscription in that the subscriber receives regular programs that he/she can listen to at his/her own leisure.
Here is a short tutorial on how to get podcasts on your desktop.
1. Get the Software
A piece of software is needed to make the connection between your computer and a podcast, allowing the automatic download of a podcast (subscribing) or saving the individual file so that you can listen to it. The software makes an automatic connection and downloads it onto your computer.
iTunes
iTunes 6 includes everything you need to subscribe, download, organize, listen to, and synchronize podcasts. You can organize audio downloads and create playlists that you can play on your computer or synch with an attached iPod so that you can make your listening mobile. Macintosh and Windows versions are available. Download and install a copy. Follow the installation wizard and restart your computer.
2. Subscribe to Podcasts
Subscribing to a podcast means that the software will be able to automatically check for new content and download it to your computer. This makes it available for playing on a computer and syncing with an iPod through iTunes. You can control when you want to update the podcasts.
