Competitive and Leisure Sports: Recommendations to Minimise Cardiovascular Risk
ROME—Exercise benefits most patients with cardiovascular disease who can take part in leisure sports safely if they wish, said Sanjay Sharma, Professor of Sports Cardiology at St George’s Hospital in London, after he chaired a session on: Arrhythmias in Competitive and Leisure Sport at the 2016 Meeting of the European Society of Cardiology held in Rome. Some patients with heart disease can even continue with competitive sports, he said, and he noted that among long-term athletes with atrial fibrillation the risks of stroke and heart disease are much less than in sedentary patients.
