BARCELONA—A new pencil beam scanning proton delivery technique—rescanning—could help limit the dose of radiation to surrounding tissues and organs by compensating for tumor motion in the chest caused by breathing. Rosalind Perrin MD, from the Centre for Proton Therapy at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland, described an anthropomorphic model that simulated tumor movement in the chest of a patient with lung cancer. Oncology Times reporter Sarah Maxwell heard details at the 3rd ESTRO Forum on how this phantom model confirmed the potential advantages of rescanning.
